Rhode Island HIE:
One name. One place for all of Rhode Island’s health data.

About Rhode Island HIE

Welcome to Rhode Island HIE! In July 2026, we will become the state’s unified health information exchange, connecting healthcare providers, public health agencies, and community partners through secure, seamless data sharing.
Rhode Island is strengthening its integrated HIE model, reaffirming a long-standing approach that emphasizes coordination and efficiency. By enabling a more unified approach, this transition will simplify contracting and reduce administrative complexity for HIE participants, placing focus on supporting the evolving needs of the healthcare community.

What’s Happening

Transforming how health information works for Rhode Island

Rhode Island is transitioning its Health Information Exchange (HIE) to a more unified model, bringing technology, operations, and management under a single organization – CRISP Shared Services (CSS). CSS, which already provides the technology infrastructure for the HIE, has been selected through a competitive 2025 procurement process to serve as Rhode Island’s Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO).

This shift is designed to modernize and strengthen the HIE by streamlining technology, governance, and operations within one entity. As part of this transition, the Rhode Island Quality Institute (RIQI), which has operated the HIE since 2007, will be sunset on June 30, 2026, along with the CurrentCare™ platform.

Beginning July 1, 2026, CSS will assume full responsibility as the state-designated operator of the Rhode Island HIE.

The Role of CRISP Shared Services

CRISP Shared Services (CSS) serves as the operator of the Rhode Island HIE and as its designated RHIO. As a nonprofit organization, CSS provides technology infrastructure and strategic expertise to support HIE functions. Its proven shared services model, used across multiple states and regions, helps reduce costs while enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the HIE.

In Rhode Island, CSS is responsible for:

  • Operating the day-to-day functions of the HIE
  • Delivering and maintaining the underlying technology platform
  • Supporting participants with tools, integrations, and services
  • Advancing innovation while ensuring privacy, security, and HIPAA compliance

Because CSS is already the technology provider for Rhode Island’s HIE, this transition enables continuity of services while strengthening the overall system with a fully integrated structure.
